I'd never watched rowing before, im remember watching this live at the time and bursting into tears when gb got over the line. Was truly amazing and absolutely brilliant commentary.
All that kissing men to get to the punchline of ignoring the woman. Absolute genius!
не, ну круто
That was the last time Australia won this boat in the Olympics after Atlanta 96 GB started a dynasty with very powerful crews
So we’re just ignoring Tokyo then 😂
Oh I'm sorry my bad I forgot that 🙏🙏
Exceptional win by Yale in that semifinal to come from behind against TCD, and well done on winning the Ladies Plate. I was in the Wits University crew that got the drubbing in the final - we got there by getting past Harvard in the morning semi final by a couple of feet, and a win over Ridley College, Canada the day before, also by about a canvass. I was hoping to find some video of those races, so while it was nice to see our crew in action it wasn't the ideal race to see from my perspective ; ) Any idea if there is some video out there of the Wits University crew v Harvard or Ridley HRR Ladies Plate 1980?
If you find anymore HRR 1980 coverage let me know. There is video of the National Championships when Wits raced as Thames RC on this channel ua-cam.com/video/F5MT8JfFbFM/v-deo.html
@@MostynARC Thanks - yes I did see the National Champs footage when we rowed as Thames RC. I was the stroke of that crew. The commentator mentioned that the Thames crew had quite strong South African accents. That was our last race as a crew - for most of us it was our final year at university and our domestic season was over. In 1981 Wits crashed their truck and boat trailer wiping out just about all their boats and severely injuring a few guys. Four of us from 1980 regrouped a few years later and 3 went to HRR in 1984 - raced as Cantabrigian RC, 2 in the boat that won the Thames Cup (made a lot of people justifiably unhappy ) and myself in a lightweight crew, also Cantabrigian - losing semifinalists to one of the Brit lightweight squads in the Wyfold. Those 3 blokes will be at HRR this year for a small reunion. Thanks for the memories - if I find any other video I will let you know. Please do the same.
@@russellbruton164 If I remember correctly you were coached by Peter Jones in 1980 (my old school coach in the UK). Which is why we (UL) had a practice outing with you in the week before the regatta
@@MostynARC Indeed! Lovely guy and a superb coach. Peter came out to SA as coach of a touring Emanuel School crew in 1976 - my final year at school. Were you part of that, and do you know if Peter is still around - he became a bit of a recluse? He was persuaded to come back to coach by some of the parents of guys in the St Stithian's College set up. Turned St Stithians into the premier rowing school in SA, so when we figured we had a half decent crew at Wits in 1980 we asked him to coach us and tell us if we were good enough to compete at HRR. So we got there with his help. I remember that outing with UL, great experience for us. I'm guessing you were the #6 in the UL boat? Incidentally Imperial College came to SA in 1980, rowed in InterVarsity in Cape Town as well as SA champs (I think). Then we drew them in the second round at HRR and raced against them in the heat at Nottingham. See you at HRR?
@@russellbruton164 Peter is indeed a recluse, but we exchange Christmas cards and we met up at HRR a few years ago (he doesnt normally come). Yes I was in the Emanuel crew in 1976 and at 6 in the 1980 UL crew
Who won?
I always love that scene starting at 0:46
TOP GEAR GARDEN
Anyone notice Hugh Laurie in the Cambridge boat?
Quite a few olympic gold medalists in that boat
grande Italia!
Judge sgouted himself hoarse "OFORD!"
lol
Waddell was such a beast.
Oxford need to hold their finishes up, I see the blades before each stroke is finished Cover Cover Cover the old George Harris method !!!
This is incredible! Gully is my great great uncle. I am so proud of what my ancestors achieved and to actually hear his voice is amazing! If there is anything else out there relating to the Nickalls family I would love to know.
Given the lack of stream both coxes' steering was completely mad off the starts.
Agreed, the Oxbridge coxes generally become obsessed about fighting for the stream and dont have the nous to understand that the tideway is a complicated place. Looks likes Oxford's fault to me, maybe not in the first 15 secs but after that when they clash. But then I might be biased as I had Christian Cormack coxing UL crews I coached on the tideway.
Oh gosh Lmao
Oh yar hahahah
Fuuùk of its a load of posh private boys acting like idiot
Bullshit
Compare this to lifeboats crews
Oh gosh hahahh
Knoweone cares about posh private boys
RAHHHH 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
They might have been hospitalized if they'd sank yesterday.
grandstand ended with the being shown again - my brother in law stated a rather obvious reason why it happened - everybody carried on rowing instead of one or more of them deciding to bail out the water - but i suppose that is rowing for you.
Si que lo mereciste Vaclav.
💕Wow🤍🤍🤍💗🤍🤍🤍
Epic achievement
Ugghhhh I remember those white handles 🤬
I've never seen before this regatta. Thanks as always MAC
Don't think these are women mate
One of THE most emotional and spectacular sporting achievements ever - along with fantastic commentary I remember watching it live in 2000 with tears in my eyes, and 24 years on - it still makes me cry Totally amazing 👍🏼
Wow, thanks for uploading this classic! I remember when it came out, feels like ages ago...
What a legend & fantastic achievement, well done sir Steve Redgrave, I salute you ...
Can u help me
Cambridge won by a time zone.
Wow fantastic achievement ❤
What a race , every time I watch this I get goosebumps, well done GB 👏 ❤
Superb race, brilliantly timed assault by Cambridge and majestically stroked by Fred Gill - all believing in each other!
Do you have the 2008 4- Olympic Final race? I can't seem to find a version of that race anywhere other than the very short low quality documentary edit
Sorry don’t have that race, but even if I did have it and uploaded it, the IOC would probably block it on UA-cam (claiming copyright)
Personally, the 1993 Cambridge crew were my favourite Boat Race crew ever. There was a real magic about them that year and they were like heroes to me. Some were saying that they were the first Olympic standard crew ever. I'd only been rowing a few years by then, was 19, and remember seeing them train from the Goldie boathouse. Will Mason's legs were massive! Interesting what they were saying about the late great Harry Mahon from about 10:24. I met him a couple of times in Cambridge and, while I was never coached by him, it was clear that he was the perfect technician. I also suspect that he was from the Arthur Lydiard (a fellow kiwi) school of endurance training - getting the extra miles in!
The tall blonde Cambridge bow man Toby Wallace was tragically killed in 2013 along with a colleague Andrew McMenigall while doing a cycle ride in aid of charity. He competed in the World Rowing Championships, the Coolangatta Gold Surf Ironman Race in 2009 on the Gold Coast of Australia; the world 24-hour solo mountain bike championships in 2009; and also came 10th in the Expeditionary Adventure Race in 2010. He also encouraged and inspired young people to get into sports. A very sad ending.
The hatchet style blades that Cambridge is using were pretty new in 1993, and they surely accounted for some of the difference in this race. Oxford was crazy to not use them.
I still don't know why Oxford stuck with the macons. Lots of us town clubs were rowing with cleavers by 93.
I took part in the 1984 final in the Molesey BC crew....what an event! Good to see some footage, there seems to be very little of it from that era.
That 1952 race looked brutal! I've raced in the snow before, but not for over 4 miles.
My favourite Olympics off all time
Hugh Laurie at 4 for Cambridge in the 1980 race.
'They really are mad, the Italians' 😂
